Passages Not in the True Testament

This list gives every passage of the church’s text of Luke and of the ten letters that has no verse in the True Testament, sorted by what the evidence shows about it. A passage that no witness quotes is not thereby shown to be absent from Marcion’s text; only the first group are omissions the witnesses demonstrate. The evidence for each passage is given in full in the apparatus, under the True Testament verse named in the last column. The passages in the last two groups are also printed in the Greek text of this edition, at the place where they stood; those in the first two groups are not.

• Absence attested: 23 passages
• Absence probable: 33 passages
• Absence not established: 229 passages
• Omitted against the witnesses: 13 passages

Absence attested

A witness shows that the passage was not in Marcion’s text: he says it was cut, or quotes the text on either side of it without it, or argues from its absence.

Absence probable

No witness says so, but the order or wording of a witness, or the judgment of Harnack or Zahn on stated grounds, points to absence.

Absence not established

No witness and no scholar shows the passage to be absent. It is not in the True Testament by the True Testament’s own decision, and its absence from Marcion’s text is not claimed.

Omitted against the witnesses

A witness quotes or reports the passage as present in Marcion’s text. The True Testament leaves it out by decision. These passages are printed in the Greek at the place where they stood, each with a note that the True Testament omits it.
